Cubs Reinstate Ethan Roberts from IL, Option Gavin Hollowell
The Cubs made a small move ahead of their series with the Rangers, the details of which are below. Ethan Roberts has been out for a while after suffering a cut to his right middle finger when a vent fell off a wall during his workout. As long as he can throw strikes and get outs, he’ll have a job. In order to make room on the roster, Gavin Hollowell was optioned back to Triple-A Iowa. Hollowell had just been called up, but he walked four and gave up two hits while recording two walks.
To be fair, that last walk probably would have been a strikeout if the Cubs hadn’t run out of challenges. Still, Hollowell has battled control problems throughout his career and struggled late with a big lead.
The Chicago Cubs today reinstated right-handed pitcher Ethan Roberts from the 15-day injured list. In a corresponding move, the club optioned right-handed pitcher Gavin Hollowell to Triple-A Iowa.
Roberts, 28, landed on the injured list on April 14 with a right middle finger laceration. The right-handed pitcher has tossed 2.2 scoreless innings with two strikeouts in three relief appearances for the Cubs this season. Roberts made five rehab appearances with Triple-A Iowa since April 25, allowing one run on three hits in 5.0 innings (1.80 ERA). All told, across 43 career major league relief appearances, all with Chicago, Roberts is 2-2 with a 4.70 ERA (24 ER/46.0 IP).
Hollowell, 28, was recalled from Triple-A Iowa and made his season debut yesterday vs. Cincinnati, allowing two runs in 1.2 innings of relief.
The Cubs play the Texas Rangers today at 7:05 p.m. at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, in a game that can be seen on Marquee and heard on 104.3 the Score.
