Cubs, Red Sox Reportedly Planning Friday Doubleheader to Avoid Weather

According to Tim Healey of the Boston Globe, the Cubs and Red Sox are planning to play a doubleheader on Friday to avoid the nor’easter that is supposed to hit Boston this weekend. The “best chance” to finish the series would be to play as early as possible on Saturday, which could allow them to beat the rain and get an extra day off rather than having to play on Monday. If a third game is needed, that is.

That echoes what Buster Olney tweeted out Wednesday afternoon, and Bruce Levine noted much of the same while adding the possibility of a different venue. A decision is expected in the next 24 hours, which probably goes without saying due to travel plans. After all, the Cubs need to know where they’re going after Thursday’s game with the Marlins.

If they’re indeed playing a Friday twin bill, they’ll want to arrive in Boston (or wherever) as soon as possible to be prepared. The good news in all of this is that the Red Sox may not have anything to play for, and both teams could end up with an extra day off by pushing everything up. Playing two on Friday isn’t ideal, of course, but it’s a helluva lot better than trying to squeeze them in on Monday.
