Gavin Hollowell, Riley Martin Facing Dansby Swanson at Wrigley as Rain Alters Rehab Schedule
If you were hoping that righty Gavin Hollowell and/or lefty Riley Martin were going to swoop in and save the Cubs’ bullpen at the end of the season, you might be disappointed. Both relievers arrived at Wrigley Field on Wednesday afternoon, but it was a matter of getting in some rehab work rather than waiting out the rain in Omaha. They ended up pitching a simulated game against Dansby Swanson, who also played some short as he works his way back ahead of a probable Friday activation.
Swanson now batting again vs. Martin. I’m catching on to the plan. He faced a righty, now a lefty. Brilliant. https://t.co/5PY2Kqxfg0

Hollowell has been out since July 31 due to right shoulder inflammation and made three rehab appearances at Triple-A Iowa before his scheduled relief appearance on Tuesday night was washed out. Martin has been out since April 23 with elbow inflammation and was supposed to pitch today for Iowa, so his appearance at Wrigley is just about keeping that cadence.
Craig Counsell told media members on Tuesday that the goal for Martin was simply to have him finish the season healthy, so there is no expectation that he’ll make it all the way back.
