Cubs Reportedly Promoting BJ Murray When Rosters Expand

As first reported by Amajahl Knowles, sports editor for the Broadcasting Corporation of The Bahamas, Cubs infield prospect BJ Murray will be the newest Bahamian in MLB. The move is expected to be finalized once rosters expand on September 1, at which point Murray will have to be added to the 40-man roster. That was going to have to happen this winter anyway, with Murray eligible for the Rule 5 Draft in December (assuming there is one), so that’s not a big deal.

They have one spot available already, meaning no one will have to be cut loose, and having two extra roster spots means they won’t have to demote anyone either. Murray, who was born in The Bahamas and later attended Florida Atlantic, was a 15th-round pick by the Cubs in 2021. He has spent most of his five-plus years in the minors at first and third, though he has also played 10 games in left field for the Iowa Cubs this year.

A switch-hitter with a great plate approach and a little pop, Murray has really broken out at Triple-A this season after struggling there last year. His performance at Double-A was much stronger in 2025, which is what helped him earn a spot on Team Great Britain in the latest World Baseball Classic. I’m not sure what kind of a future he’s got in Chicago, but he provides nice depth for the stretch run while getting a chance to see what life is like in the big leagues
