Cubs Reinstate Matt Shaw, Option Kevin Alcántara

Matt Shaw has been out of action for two months with a sprained left hand, but he’s looked good in five rehab games with Triple-A Iowa and is now ready to return. The versatile defender went 6-for-19 with four runs driven in while playing second, shortstop, third, and left. He did strike out seven times, but that’s not entirely unexpected after the prolonged layoff.

The Chicago Cubs today reinstated infielder/outfielder Matt Shaw from the 10-day injured list. In a corresponding move, outfielder Kevin Alcántara has been optioned to Triple-A Iowa.

Shaw, 24, was placed on the injured list on June 29 with a left hand sprain. Prior to his placement on the IL, he was batting .246 (32-for-130) with six doubles, two triples, four home runs, 20 RBI and a .737 OPS in 56 games with Chicago. He made five rehab appearances with the I-Cubs, recording six hits in 19 at-bats (.316 avg.) with one double, four RBI and a .350 OBP.

Alcántara, 24, has hit .240 (6-for-25) with one home run and six RBI in 24 games with the Cubs this season.

The Cubs play the Cincinnati Reds today at 1:20 p.m. at Wrigley Field in a game that can be seen on Marquee Sports Network and heard on 104.3 the Score and, in Spanish, on TUDN 106.7.
