Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (8/9/26): Cubs 10, Royals 2 – Nice Win Secures Series in KC

The Cubs and Royals met in the deciding game of their series on a very hot Sunday afternoon at Kauffman Stadium. Craig Counsell‘s squad did not mess around with this one, hitting double digits on the scoreboard and rolling to victory.

Chicago was productive early against Kansas City starter Randy Dobnak with a Michael Conforto sacrifice fly in the top of the 1st, followed by back-to-back RBI singles from Conforto and Nico Hoerner in the top of the 3rd. Alex Bregman singled in another run in the 4th inning and the margin was 4-0.

Matthew Boyd made his only real mistake in the bottom of the frame when Starling Marte connected on a two-run homer to cut the Royals’ deficit to 4-2. The North Siders broke the game open against reliever Easton McGee in the top of the 6th with another RBI single by Bregman, after which Ian Happ cracked a two-run shot to increase the advantage to 7-2.

The Cubs padded their lead when Miguel Amaya hit a no-doubt three-run homer to left field that made it 10-2 in the 7th. That would be the final, as the road team took home another series win. (Box score)

Chicago immediately jumped on the Kansas City bullpen in the 6th to blow the game wide open and remove any doubt about the outcome.

They got very good starting pitching and collected seven hits with runners in scoring position.

• Bregman and Michael Busch each had three more hits.
• Suddenly, Happ has homered in consecutive games and had two other hits.

Bottom Line  

The Cubs have now won eight consecutive series on the road, which is something they haven’t done since 1912. If any team can consistently take two out of three away from home, they are going to have a wildly successful season. Chicago has gone from having a huge vulnerability in the starting rotation to being very solid from top to bottom, and Boyd’s resurgence is a big part of it.
