Cubs Sign Former Brewers IF/OF Greg Jones to Minors Deal

According to the team’s transactions log, the Cubs have signed former No. 22 overall pick Greg Jones to a minor league deal after he was outrighted by the Brewers and elected free agency. He was drafted by the Rays in 2019 and played shortstop before transitioning to the outfield in 2023. He has continued to split time between short, second, and all three outfield positions, with most of his time coming in right this year.

Jones has been assigned to Triple-A Iowa and should suit up soon, but this feels very much like a lottery ticket. He has seen limited MLB action with the Rockies, White Sox, and Brewers over the last three seasons, slashing .100/.129/.200 over 32 total plate appearances. His .264/.351/.431 line in the minors is much better, and the 28-year-old has decent speed to go with the defensive versatility.

The big issue is his 35.5% strikeout rate across 815 career plate appearances at Triple-A, which doesn’t figure to be much better in the bigs. If anything, he might be able to contribute as a pinch runner in September.
