Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (6/27/26): Cubs 8, Brewers 2 – Peterson, Power Lead to W
The Cubs found themselves in another close game in the middle innings against the Brewers at American Family Field Saturday night. There was a role reversal from Friday, however, with the home team suffering the bullpen meltdown and Craig Counsell‘s squad winning to even the series.
New addition David Peterson was greeted rudely when leadoff hitter Jackson Chourio hit his first pitch for a solo home run that gave Milwaukee a 1-0 advantage. Chicago finally got to starter Kyle Harrison in the top of the 4th when Seiya Suzuki hit a two-run homer to put his team in front 2-1.
The Brewers evened the score in the bottom of the 5th on an RBI single by Sal Frelick. The North Siders then broke the game open with four runs against reliever Chad Patrick with two outs in the top of the 6th. Nico Hoerner brought home the first tally with a single and then Ian Happ had the big blow, crushing a three-run homer that made the margin 6-2.
The Cubs added two more insurance runs on a sacrifice fly by Alex Bregman in the 7th and a solo shot by pinch-hitter Michael Conforto in the 9th. Milwaukee generated almost nothing the rest of the night and lost 8-2. (Box score)
Key Moment
Hoerner’s RBI single kept the 6th inning alive, allowing Happ to hit the game-changing homer that gave Chicago firm control.
Why the Cubs Won
Excellent pitching and three home runs was the winning formula in this one.
Stats That Matter
- Peterson gave his new team a huge boost with that performance: 5.2 IP, 2 R, 5 H, 2 K, and 0 BB.
- Suzuki had two hits and has homered in consecutive games.
- The bullpen allowed a single baserunner in 3.1 innings of work.
Bottom Line
The Cubs accomplished the first goal of avoiding a sweep while facing the Brewers’ top three arms. Peterson being a decent pitcher going forward would really help the rotation. If Chicago somehow could steal this series, it would be an outstanding road trip.
On Deck
The rubber match of the series is Sunday afternoon at 1:10pm CT. The Cubs are going with a bullpen game against Brandon Woodruff in a contest broadcast on Marquee with a radio feed on The Score.
