Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (6/16/26): Rockies 5, Cubs 2 – Cabrera Leaves Early in Loss

The Cubs could not repeat the magic from Monday night’s dramatic comeback victory over the Rockies. They went in front early but gave up the lead and continued the trend of wasting opportunities with runners in scoring position.

Pete Crow-Armstrong started things off with a bang for the second consecutive game with a solo home run against Ryan Feltner in the bottom of the 1st. Matt Shaw came in to score on a wild pitch in the 2nd inning and Chicago was on top 2-0.

Starting pitcher Edward Cabrera had no issues in the first three innings, not allowing a single baserunner, then he got ambushed to begin the top of the 4th. A single, an RBI double by Willi Castro, and a two-run homer by TJ Rumfield gave Colorado a 3-2 edge.

Cabrera had control problems in the 5th as he was battling a cramp in his throwing hand that forced him to come out of the game. Ryan Rolison came on in relief with two on and one out, eventually surrendering two more runs on a wild pitch and an RBI ground out by Castro.

The North Siders could not make a dent in the 5-2 deficit the rest of the night and would lose the game by that same margin. (Box score)

Key Moment

The Cubs had runners on second and third with nobody out in the bottom of the 2nd and came away with just a single run on a wild pitch.

Why the Cubs Lost

It was a very familiar story, as they went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position and nine left on base.

Stats That Matter

  • Cabrera should be fine but continues to be wildly inconsistent even from inning to inning.
  • Seiya Suzuki had a double and a single.
  • Miguel Amaya also had a single and a double.

Bottom Line

The Cubs have not played particularly well in either game of the series and were lucky to escape with a win on Monday. Unless they can turn around their production with runners on base, it’s going to be a struggle every night.

On Deck

The rubber match is Wednesday night at 7:05pm CT. Javier Assad takes on Sean Sullivan in a contest airing on Marquee with a radio feed on The Score.
