Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (6/14/26): Giants 5, Cubs 1 – Webb Dominates Cubs In L
The Cubs’ winning streak was snapped at three games in the finale at Oracle Park Sunday afternoon. Giants ace Logan Webb dominated for eight innings, giving the road team very little chance to come out with a victory.
Ryan Rolison served as the opener for Chicago before being replaced by Colin Rea in the bottom of the 2nd. Rea ran into trouble in the 5th when Drew Gilbert hit a bloop RBI double and Matt Chapman followed with a two-run homer to give San Francisco a 3-0 advantage.
The Giants added another run on a single by Bryce Eldridge in the bottom of the 7th. The North Siders were gifted their only tally in the 8th on a throwing error by first baseman Casey Schmitt that allowed Dansby Swanson to score.
San Francisco got one more on another blooper by catcher Daniel Susac in the bottom of the frame and won the game 5-1. (Box score)
Key Moment
The Cubs had two men on base with one out in the top of the 1st and Ian Happ grounded into a double play to end the threat. That was the last time they would have two runners on base the rest of the game.
Why the Cubs Lost
They had to face very good starting pitcher who was on his game Sunday and could do very little against him.
Stats That Matter
- Rea had some bad luck with some of the soft contact that found grass: 4.2 IP, 4 R, 6 H, 2 K, and 3 BB.
- Pete Crow-Armstrong had a couple of singles.
Bottom Line
The Cubs made progress this series by winning it. They had a very unfavorable pitching matchup on Sunday and could not pull off the sweep, but broke even on the trip. Now they have to play better at Wrigley Field this week. If they can’t do that, things start to look pretty tricky going forward.
On Deck
The Rockies travel to Chicago for three games starting Monday at 7:05pm CT. Shōta Imanaga goes up against Michael Lorenzen in a contest broadcast on Marquee with a radio feed on The Score.
