Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (6/11/26): Cubs 9, Rockies 3 – Suzuki Slam Leads to Victory
The Cubs salvaged the final game of their series against the Rockies at Coors Field Thursday afternoon. They did the trick with the help of three home runs and won comfortably for a change.
Colorado struck first against Edward Cabrera with a solo home run by catcher Brett Sullivan in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Chicago responded in a big way in the top of the 4th when Seiya Suzuki hit a grand slam off of starter Ryan Feltner to put his team ahead 4-1.
The Rockies got one of those runs back on a solo shot by Cole Carrigg in the bottom of the frame. The North Siders expanded on their lead with an RBI single from Michael Busch and a sacrifice fly by Ian Happ in the top of the 5th.
The Cubs added additional insurance on a two-run homer by Alex Bregman in the 7th and a solo blast by Carson Kelly in the 8th that made it 9-2. Sullivan add a second home run in the bottom of the 9th as Colorado went down 9-3. (Box score)
Key Moment
It felt like the Cubs had been waiting a year for someone to get a big hit with the bases loaded and Suzuki finally did. That one swing completely turned the game around.
Why the Cubs Won
The offense at last took advantage of the friendly environment in Denver and put up a big crooked number.
Stats That Matter
- Much better effort for Cabrera after getting shelled in his last start: 5.1 IP, 2 R, 5 H, 5 K, and 2 BB.
- Bregman got a home run and a hit with runners in scoring position on the same pitch.
Bottom Line
The Cubs avoided the embarrassment of being swept by the Rockies, but this wasn’t what they were hoping for out of the series. They are going to need more performances from the lineup like they got today, and a lot of the players who starred in this one have the capability to carry a team when they are hot. They desperately need some of those hitters to do that immediately.
On Deck
Next stop is San Francisco for a weekend series with the Giants beginning Friday at 9:15pm CT. Javier Assad goes up against Landen Roupp in a matchup televised on Marquee with a radio feed on The Score.
