Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (6/9/26): Rockies 7, Cubs 3 – Rea Rocked by Rox

The Cubs’ stretch of poor play continued against the Rockies in the series opener at Coors Field Tuesday night as they suffered another loss. Colin Rea was the latest starting pitcher to get lit up by the opposition and put his squad in a deep hole before the game really got going.

Hunter Goodman gave Colorado the lead with a two-run homer off of Rea in the bottom of the 1st. The home team added three more in the following inning on an Ezequiel Tovar solo shot, a double by Edouard Julien, and a single from Jake McCarthy to make it 5-0.

Chicago got one back on Tomoyuki Sugano when Alex Bregman had a sacrifice fly in the top of the 3rd. The Rockies responded in the bottom of the frame when Julien knocked a two-run single to increase the advantage to 7-1.

The North Siders scored a pair of runs in the 6th inning on a Michael Busch home run and an RBI groundout by Seiya Suzuki. That would be as close as things got as Colorado went on to win by the same 7-3 margin. (Box score)

Key Moment

The Cubs are in a very fragile state right now, and falling behind in the opening inning just exacerbates everything.

Why the Cubs Lost

Another starting pitching implosion put this game out of reach pretty quickly.

Stats That Matter

  • Rea would not be in the rotation if there were any other options: 4.2 IP, 7 R, 9 H, 2 K, and 3 BB.
  • Bregman had a pair of singles, but power has been elusive.

Bottom Line

There is really no other way to say it: the Cubs’ starting rotation is non-competitive right now. If you remove Ben Brown, the rest of the starting pitchers have ERAs well above 6.00 the past month. You just can’t win many games when you are constantly giving up crooked numbers in the first four innings. Jed Hoyer may have to start bringing in replacement-level starters to just give the rest of the team a chance.

On Deck

Game two of the series is Wednesday night at 7:40pm CT. Shōta Imanaga takes on Michael Lorenzen in a contest available on Marquee with a radio broadcast available on The Score.
