Chicago Cubs vs San Francisco Giants – Series Preview (June 5-7): Overview, Game and Broadcast Info, Starting Pitchers, W2W4

The Cubs (33-30) continued their recent struggles by dropping another series to the Athletics at Wrigley Field. They avoided a sweep with the help of a dramatic 9th-inning comeback win on Thursday that gave them a temporary reprieve from what has been a very rough month. Now they welcome a weak Giants squad to the Friendly Confines for a weekend set starting Friday afternoon.

Buster Posey’s team (25-38) has been bad from the start in 2026 and is way off the pace in the NL West. Manager Tony Vitello made the jump from college to MLB and probably wishes he had stayed at Tennessee right about now.

The Giants’ offense has been decent with a .712 team OPS that ranks 13th in baseball. Slugger Casey Schmitt is having a big year with 13 homers and an .844 OPS of .844, and both Luis Arraez and Jung Hoo Lee have been on-base machines at the top of the lineup.

San Francisco has had major issues in the starting rotation with a 4.83 ERA, one of the worst in MLB. Ace Logan Webb has struggled a bit, but the Cubs won’t see him this weekend. Veteran lefty Robbie Ray is probably the second-best starter, and he hasn’t been great either.

Even though the bullpen has been somewhat better, it’s still not close to lights-out. Old friend Caleb Kilian has managed to establish himself in a relief role, along with Keaton Winn and Matt Gage.

The Cubs’ next four series are against the Rockies and Giants, two of the worst teams in baseball, so this is an opportunity Craig Counsell‘s group needs to capitalize on to get back on track. Time to find out if they can get things going again.
