Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (6/2/26): Athletics 2, Cubs 1 – Bats Go Quiet Again at Wrigley
The Cubs started the new month pretty much the same way they ended the previous one, with a lackluster offensive performance against the Athletics Tuesday night. They suffered the loss despite a quality performance by struggling starter Jameson Taillon.
Chicago had an excellent early, getting runners on second and third with nobody out in the bottom of the 1st against left-hander Gage Jump. The home team would only come away with one run on an RBI groundout by Alex Bregman.
The A’s evened the game when Nick Kurtz hit a solo home run off of Taillon in the top of the 3rd inning. They went ahead 2-1 on an RBI single by Zack Gelof in the 4th, at which point the offense completely dried up for both squads.
The North Siders had one more chance in their final at-bat, but it went nowhere as they went down to defeat by the same 2-1 margin. (Box score)
Key Moment
Nico Hoerner and Pete Crow-Armstrong got on base to begin the bottom of the 9th, but a strikeout and a pair of fly balls ended the threat.
Why the Cubs Lost
It was another night where the lineup could not do anything and wasted a quality pitching performance.
Stats That Matter
- Taillon was very good Tuesday and deserved better: 6.1 IP, 2 R, 6 H, 6 K, and 1 BB.
- Hoerner got on base three times with two walks and a single.
Bottom Line
The Cubs’ big hitters in the middle of the lineup have done almost nothing the past month, and it is really hurting offensive production. If they don’t figure it out, it’s going to be very hard to score runs for the rest of the season.
On Deck
Game two of the series is Wednesday night at 7:05pm CT. Colin Rea faces off against Jeffrey Springs in a matchup broadcast on Marquee with a radio feed on The Score.
