Cubs Option Jordan Wicks, Recall Tyler Ferguson

Between two uncompetitive starts and Matthew Boyd‘s imminent return, it was clear Jordan Wicks wasn’t long for the roster. But the Cubs needed a live arm in the meantime, so they made a roster move. More on that in the press release below.

The Chicago Cubs today recalled right-handed pitcher Tyler Ferguson (#64) from Triple-A Iowa. In a corresponding move, left-handed pitcher Jordan Wicks has been optioned to Iowa.

Ferguson, 32, has pitched to a 3.52 ERA (3 ER/7.2 IP) with five strikeouts, five walks, and a 1.17 WHIP in six relief outings with the I-Cubs since being acquired from the Athletics on May 7. He made one major league appearance out of the bullpen with the Athletics this season, allowing four earned runs on four hits with one strikeout in 1.1 innings of work.

The righty made his major league debut on May 7, 2024, with the then-Oakland Athletics, tossing 2.0 scoreless innings with one hit, two walks and three strikeouts. In 105 career major league games, all in relief for the Athletics, Ferguson is 8-4 with four saves, a 4.47 ERA (55 ER/110.2 IP) and 117 strikeouts, compared to 58 walks.

Ferguson, a native of Fresno, Calif., was drafted by Texas in the sixth round of the 2015 draft out of Vanderbilt University.

Wicks, 26, made two starts with the Cubs this season, suffering two losses and posting a 15.63 ERA (11 ER/6.1 IP) with six strikeouts and one walk.

The Cubs play the Athletics tonight at 7:05 p.m. at Wrigley Field in a game that can be seen on Marquee Sports Network and heard on 104.3 the Score and, in Spanish, on TUDN 106.7.
