Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (5/20/26): Brewers 5, Cubs 0 – Sloppy Cubs Swept By Brewers

The Cubs continued their very poor play against the Brewers on Wednesday night and lost their fourth consecutive game. It was an all-around sloppy and lifeless performance from the home team, who were swept at Wrigley for the first time since 2023.

Milwaukee took advantage of a major mistake by Pete Crow-Armstrong to move ahead in the top of the 2nd inning. David Hamilton singled to center against Edward Cabrera with two men on, and PCA whiffed on the ball, letting it roll all the way to the wall. Hamilton came all the way around score on a Little League homer that made it 3-0.

One run would have been sufficient because Chicago could do nothing against Brewers starter Kyle Harrison. The young left-hander eventually struck out 11 in seven scoreless innings.

Jake Bauers had an RBI single in the top of the 3rd to increase the Brew Crew’s margin to 4-0. The North Siders got another injury scare when Cabrera exited with the trainer in the 4th, but it was relatively good news with a diagnosis of a blister on his right middle finger.

The Brewers added one more on a wild pitch by Phil Maton in the top of the 7th inning and went on to win 5-0. (Box score)

Key Moment

The Cubs had very little margin for error against Harrison, so the mistake from PCA really hurt. They were never in the game after that.

Why the Cubs Lost

Sloppy defense did not help things, but the lineup got completely dominated by the opposing starting pitcher.

Stats That Matter

  • Hopefully the blister is not a major issue for Cabrera because Chicago cannot afford any more pitching injuries.
  • The North Siders had a grand total of four baserunners on Wednesday.

Bottom Line

After playing some of their best baseball two weeks ago, the Cubs are currently playing their absolute worst right now. This game was probably the most concerning because of how discombobulated everyone on the roster was. They are still in a good position record wise but they can’t let this keep going or that will go away very quickly.

On Deck

Chicago gets Thursday off to try and recover before welcoming the Astros to Wrigley field for a weekend series beginning Friday at 1:20pm CT. Jameson Taillon faces off against Spencer Arrighetti in a game televised exclusively on Apple TV+ with a radio feed on The Score.
