Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (5/9/26): Rangers 6, Cubs 0 – Shutout Snaps Winning Streak

The Cubs’ winning streak finally came to an end against the Rangers on Saturday night. Squandered early scoring chances and a rare bad starting pitching effort combined to ensure their first defeat in nearly two weeks.

Chicago put tons of pressure on Texas starter Jack Leiter, putting seven men on base in the first three innings, but they could not score a single run. Edward Cabrera was not so lucky, surrendering a solo homer to Josh Jung and an RBI single to Alejandro Osuna in the bottom of the 2nd to put the Cubs in a 2-0 hole.

The Rangers doubled their advantage in the bottom of the 4th with an RBI double by Joc Pederson and a second run-scoring single by Osuna. Justin Foscue hit his first career homer against Cabrera to make it 5-0 in the 5th.

The North Siders did almost nothing with the bats after their early chances, and the Rangers added one more run to win by a final of 6-0. (Box score)

Key Moment

The Cubs stranded eight runners in the first four innings of the game, which came back to hunt them.

Why the Cubs Lost

They didn’t get a good start and were shut out.

Stats That Matter

  • Cabrera just did not have it in this one: 5 IP, 5 R, 7 H, 6 K, and 1 BB.
  • Michael Conforto stayed hot with a double and a walk.

Bottom Line

Streaks are made to be broken, and that’s what happened to the Cubs in this one. They finally came up short with runners on base after consistently coming through during the recent tear. This is just one of those games where nothing goes right and it’s not anything they should dwell on.

On Deck

The rubber match of the series is Sunday afternoon at 1:25pm CT. Jameson Taillon goes up against veteran Jacob deGrom in a contest broadcast on on Marquee with a radio feed on The Score.
