Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (5/8/26): Cubs 7, Rangers 1 – Another 10-Game Streak

The Cubs did not skip a beat in the first game of their road swing, beating the Rangers easily by building a big advantage in the middle innings and coasting to a 10th consecutive victory. It was a nice change from some of their recent wins.

They got to opposing starter Kumar Rocker in the opening frame with a bloop double by Michael Conforto, followed by an RBI single from Ian Happ. Seiya Suzuki later connected on a two-run homer to expand the lead to 3–0.

Ben Brown got the spot start for the North Siders and was brilliant, giving up just a walk in four frames. The Rangers scored their only run against Ryan Rolison in the bottom of the 5th on an RBI single by Justin Foscue to cut the deficit to 3-1.

Pete Crow-Armstrong doubled into the left field corner against reliever Cal Quantrill to plate a run in the top of the 6th. The Cubs loaded the bases with Quantrill on the mound in the 7th, and Michael Busch whacked a three-run double with two out to bust the game wide open.

Javier Assad provided 3.2 scoreless innings of relief and Ethan Roberts covered the bottom of the 9th as Chicago finished off the 7-1 win. (Box score)

Key Moment

Assad stranded runners on second and third in the bottom of the 5th to maintain the Cubs’ 3-1 edge.

Why the Cubs Won

The pitching staff did excellent work and a couple big swings of the bat were more than enough.

Stats That Matter

  • Brown got a ton of ground balls and definitely earned another start.
  • Busch also had a couple of walks and is seeing the ball very well.
  • PCA has been much better at the plate lately and had a couple of hits.

Bottom Line

The only other time in club history that the Cubs had multiple double-digit winning streaks in the same season was back in 1935, and they’ve had a 20-3 stretch just five other times in the past. They went on to play in the World Series in four of those five seasons. The big caveat is that all of them came from 1929-38, when the postseason format wasn’t nearly as much of a battle, but this is still historic territory.

On Deck

The North Siders go for 11 in a row against the Rangers on Saturday night at 6:05pm CT. Edward Cabrera is on the hill against Jack Leiter in a contest available on Marquee with a radio feed on The Score.
