Cubs Recall Gavin Hollowell, DFA Corbin Martin

Righty reliever Corbin Martin had not looked particularly sharp prior to Wednesday’s outing, and it felt like only a matter of time before he lost his spot as an emergency arm in the bullpen. After being charged with three earned runs on three hits — one of which left the yard — with no outs recorded, Martin has been designated for assignment.

Filling his role in the pen is righty Gavin Hollowell, who has seen limited action over the past two seasons. Hollowell has put up massive strikeout numbers throughout his career in the minors, including 62 Ks in just over 40 innings with Triple-A Iowa since the start of last year. He’s also walked 27, which is a little alarming. The 28-year-old brings a mid-90s fastball with a strong slider, and he should be able to miss a bat or two as long as his control is there.
