Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (4/22/26): Cubs 7, Phillies 2 – Boyd Returns as Win Streak Reaches 8
The Cubs’ winning streak reached eight on Wednesday night as they secured a series victory over the Phillies. The hitters kept rolling and the return of Matthew Boyd to the rotation got them another comfortable victory.
Chicago jumped in front on opener Kyle Backhus with an RBI groundout by Ian Happ in the bottom of the 1st. Boyd got into a little bit of trouble in the top of the 2nd, giving up a run-scoring double to Edmundo Sosa, who then came home on a Justin Crawford grounder that gave Philadelphia a 2-1 advantage.
The North Siders tied game against Taijuan Walker on an RBI double by Pete Crow-Armstrong in the bottom of the frame. They then took the lead when Alex Bregman tripled and came home on a single by Happ in the 3rd. Later in the inning, after a double play, Michael Busch hit an opposite-field home run that increased the margin to 4-2.
The Cubs added on when Seiya Suzuki hit a two-run shot off Walker to make it 6-2 in the 5th inning. Boyd came out after 4.2 frames, then Ben Brown, Corbin Martin, and Hoby Milner kept the Phillies off the scoreboard the rest of the night.
An RBI single by PCA in the bottom of the 8th finished the scoring as the Cubs completed their 7-2 triumph with no drama. (Box score)
Key Moment
The Cubs responded immediately after they fell behind and had a lead within an inning and a half. They made sure the Phillies could not build any confidence when something went right.
Why the Cubs Won
They thoroughly out-hit the Phillies yet again, making the strong pitching performance almost academic.
Stats That Matter
- Boyd showed no lingering effects from his bicep injury Wednesday: 4.2 IP, 2 R, 5 H, 5 K, and 0 BB.
- Busch had his first homer, along with a single, and is starting to come out of his slump.
- PCA got three more hits and is really driving the ball.
- Bregman had three more knocks of his own and is heating up.
Bottom Line
The Cubs have been doing everything well during this current tear, and they are getting reinforcements at the same time. They still have the return of Justin Steele looming at the end of May, which will strengthen the rotation and the bullpen. It should be a very fun summer at Wrigley Field.
On Deck
The Cubs attempt to get their second consecutive sweep on Thursday afternoon at 1:20pm CT. Edward Cabrera the start against Cristopher Sánchez in a game broadcast on Marquee with a radio feed on The Score.
