Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (2/26/26): Angels 5, Cubs 4 – Boyd Throws 3 Perfect in Loss
The Cubs traveled to Tempe to take on the Angels on a hot Thursday afternoon in the desert. The road team went out in front early before one of the pitchers from minor-league camp squandered the lead and Los Angeles won the game.
Matthew Boyd got the start for Chicago and had three perfect innings with three strikeouts. Dylan Carlson doubled home a run in the top of the 1st, then a sacrifice fly and a hit by pitch with the bases loaded made it 3-0 in the 2nd.
After the Angels scored a run in the 4th, Carlson added an RBI single to put the North Siders ahead 4-1 in the top of the 5th. Top prospect Jaxon Wiggins ran into big problems in the bottom of the frame, giving up four tallies as Los Angeles went on top 5-4.
That would be it for the scoring and the Angels ended up victorious by the same 5-4 margin. (Box score)
Key Moment
The Cubs were in pretty good shape before the wheels came off in the bottom of the 5th.
Why the Cubs Lost
One bad inning and the offense drying up after early success led to the loss.
Stats That Matter
- Boyd was super sharp in this one as he prepares for the WBC.
- Michael Busch got an RBI on that HBP and picked up a double.
- Carlson is making an early push to get a bench spot.
Bottom Line
This is a classic spring training situation where the final score does not reflect the actual results. The Cubs got great work from the players who are going to make the 26 man-roster, and that is what is important.
On Deck
Chicago is back at Sloan Park Friday to tangle with the Guardians at 2:10pm CT. Edward Cabrera makes his first appearance in a Cubs uniform, but it won’t be available to watch anywhere.
