Day three of the MLB Winter Meetings is halfway over, and the biggest deal of the week just broke. Pete Alonso has signed a five-year deal with the Baltimore Orioles worth $155 million.
BREAKING: First baseman Pete Alonso and the Baltimore Orioles are finalizing a five-year, $155 million contract, sources tell ESPN. Alonso leaves the Mets to make a loaded AL East even better.
The Orioles add a big bat that gives them one of the best lineups in baseball, with enough pieces to make a trade for a starting pitcher if needed. Alonso posted an .871 OPS during the 2025 campaign, finishing the season with 38 home runs and an .871 OPS with the Mets. David Stearns ultimately did not make an offer for Alonso, according to Anthony DiComo. They could now turn their attention to Kyle Tucker or Cody Bellinger, with few elite infield options remaining on the free agent market.
Ken Rosenthal mentioned on Wednesday that the Orioles are involved in trade discussions with the Miami Marlins regarding starting pitcher Edward Cabrera, which could be an even better fit after the Alonso signing. Coby Mayo suddenly has no spot in Baltimore, making him an intriguing option if the Marlins view him as a fit at first base.
The Cubs had significant interest in Cabrera around the trade deadline, which could make them a suitor this winter, although his price could end up too high. The Rule 5 Draft starts in a few minutes, which could jumpstart more moves as the market begins to heat up.
Another player the Cubs have shown interest in is Alex Bregman. The Boston Red Sox were an option for Pete Alonso, but now that he is off the market, a reunion with Bregman feels more likely. If the Red Sox increase their pursuit of Bregman, the Cubs could find themselves in a bidding war for the third baseman.
