Breaking: Anthony Rizzo Retires, Joins Cubs as Ambassador

The Cubs announced on Wednesday morning that Anthony Rizzo retired from Major League Baseball.

Rizzo will retire as a Cub this Saturday, as the Cubs host the Tampa Bay Rays at Wrigley Field. Rizzo is scheduled to throw out the first pitch and will join the team as an ambassador.

The Cubs traded for Rizzo in 2012. Jed Hoyer, now the President of Baseball Operations for the Cubs, had a long history with the first baseman. Hoyer drafted Rizzo in Boston, traded for him with the Padres, and then acquired him once again after joining Theo Epstein in Chicago.

During his time in Chicago, Rizzo established himself as one of the greatest players in franchise history. He was selected to three All-Star teams, winning a total of four Gold Glove Awards and the 2016 NL Platinum Glove. He hit 242 home runs during his time with the Cubs, with a 130 OPS+ and 784 runs batted in.

He led baseball in hit by pitches three different years, gaining popularity for his batting stance that crowded the plate. Rizzo won the Silver Slugger award in 2016, the year he helped lead the team to its first World Series Championship in 108 years (some people forget that).

On a personal note, Rizzo was my hero growing up, as he was for many kids who watched the Cubs. He was a consistent presence that was always in the lineup and would put on a show every time I went to Wrigley Field.
