Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (8/22/25): Cubs 3, Angels 2 – Tucker, PCA Homer

The Cubs and Angels began their series at Angel Stadium on a beautiful Friday night. Chicago got a quality pitching performance and a pair of home runs from two of their most important hitters to earn a victory.

The North Siders got a much-needed development when Kyle Tucker hit a long solo homer off of Tyler Anderson to put them ahead 1-0. Seiya Suzuki added a sacrifice fly against Anderson to increase the margin to 2-0 in the 3rd inning.

Javier Assad was very sharp on Friday, going six frames and only giving up a solo shot to Yoán Moncada in the 5th inning. Moncada struck again in the 7th, taking reliever Andrew Kittredge deep for a home run as Los Angeles tied the score.

Pete Crow-Armstrong played hero for the Cubs in the 9th inning with a majestic go-ahead homer off of closer Kenley Jansen to make it 3-2. Daniel Palencia shut down the Angels to save the victory. (Box score)

Key Moment

Neither Tucker nor PCA had a home run in the month of August, so it was huge that they both did it in the same game.

Why the Cubs Won

The pitching staff did an excellent job and the middle of the order produced just enough to get the win.

Stats That Matter

  • Assad was much better than his first two outings: 6 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 4 K, 1 BB.
  • Dansby Swanson was the only hitter to reach base twice with a double and a walk.

Bottom Line

The Cubs continue to get great pitching in the second half of the season, and it is keeping them in every game. Friday shoed how important the middle of the order is for Chicago’s success. Their game-changing power was the difference between winning and losing in this one.

On Deck

The same two teams meet again Saturday night at 8:38pm CT. Cade Horton faces off against Victor Mederos in a contest available on Marquee with a radio feed on 670 The Score.
