Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (7/12/25): Cubs 5, Yankees 2 – Boyd Brilliant in Bronx
The Cubs and Yankees met in the second game of their series at Yankee Stadium Saturday afternoon. Chicago got an outstanding pitching performance from their All-Star starter and picked up an important win.
Nico Hoerner got things started immediately against Yanks ace Max Fried with a leadoff triple, then came in to score on a groundout by Kyle Tucker. The North Siders had a big inning in the 3rd, crossing the plate three times. Carson Kelly had an RBI infield single, Dansby Swanson brought home another on a forceout, and Ian Happ knocked in one more with a hit to make it 4-0.
Matthew Boyd was absolutely brilliant for the Cubs on Saturday, throwing eight scoreless frames against a very good Yankees lineup. Kelly provided an important insurance run with a solo homer off Jonathan Loáisiga to increase the margin to 5-0 on the top of the 8th.
Things got a little tense when Aaron Judge hit a two-run dinger against Brad Keller in the 9th. Daniel Palencia came in at that point and retired the final two batters to close out the 5-2 victory. (Box score)
Key Moment
The Cubs getting on the board in the opening inning was huge for their confidence after getting blasted on Friday night. The fact it began with a triple made it even more of an energy boost.
Why the Cubs Won
They got great work from their ace and took advantage of Fried, who was battling a blister his whole outing.
Stats That Matter
- This was probably Boyd’s best game in a Cubs uniform: 8 IP, 0 R, 4 H, 6 K, 0 BB.
- Kelly had two hits and two RBI.
- Happ picked up a couple of base hits after being in a nasty slump recently.
Bottom Line
The Cubs continue to demonstrate their ability to bounce back and are now 29-10 following a loss in 2025. The surprising development of Boyd into a top-of-the-rotation arm has been a huge element of the team’s success so far.
On Deck
The rubber match of the series is Sunday afternoon at 12:35pm CT. Shōta Imanaga faces off against Will Warren in a game broadcast on MLB Network and Marquee with a radio feed on 670 The Score.
