Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (7/9/25): Twins 4, Cubs 2 – Hitters Scuffle for Second Consecutive Game
The Cubs and Twins met up for the second game of their series at a warm and pleasant Target Field on Wednesday night. The North Siders’ lineup was flat for the second consecutive night, and they went down to defeat again.
Minnesota had another productive opening inning against Cade Horton with Ryan Jeffers hitting a single and Carlos Correa doubling to put the home team ahead 2-0. Matt Wallner added on an insurance run with a long solo home run in the bottom of the 2nd that made it 3-0.
The Cubs put together their only rally against David Festa in the top of the 4th, loading the bases with one out. Dansby Swanson had an infield single and Nico Hoerner added an RBI groundout to cut the deficit to 3-2.
The Twins executed a double steal in the bottom of the frame with Royce Lewis swiping home and increasing the lead to 4-2. Chicago completely shut down offensively after that and lost by the same score. (Box score)
Key Moment
The Cubs went behind immediately for the second game in a row and they could never get back to even the score.
Why the Cubs Lost
The offense has completely evaporated in the Twin Cities so far with predictable results.
Stats That Matter
- Horton was decent but not good enough with the lack of offense: 4.2 IP, 4 R, 6 H, 5 K, 2 BB.
- Michael Busch was the only Cubs player to reach base twice with a walk and a single.
Bottom Line
Chicago picked a bad time to go cold with the Brewers suddenly breathing down their neck. They need to avoid a sweep so a couple of bad games don’t turn into a losing streak. The first goal in the next game should be a scoreless opening inning because, it goes without saying, being behind early and often is not a good long-term strategy for winning.
On Deck
Minnesota attempts to complete the aforementioned sweep Thursday at 12:10pm CT. Colin Rea gets the start against Chris Paddack in a contest available on MLB Network and Marquee with a radio feed on 670 The Score.
