Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (6/25/25): Cubs 8, Cardinals 0 – Boyd, Bats Bash Birds

The scuffling Cubs battled the Cardinals on Wednesday night on another hot night at Busch Stadium. Chicago was determined to snap their three-game losing streak, scoring early and often en route to a decisive victory.

Ian Happ started the game with a bang, hitting a solo home run off of Erick Fedde on the very first pitch of the game. The North Siders kept it up in the 2nd inning with an RBI single by Michael Busch and a two-run homer by Reese McGuire to make it 4-0.

Matthew Boyd was outstanding on Wednesday and gave up very little to the Cardinals in six strong frames. Kyle Tucker hit a solo dinger to put the Cubs ahead 5-0 in the top of the 3rd.

Happ continued his big night, knocking in a pair with a single in the 4th to give Chicago a 7-0 lead. Matt Shaw added an RBI groundout in the 5th to build the margin to 8-0. Porter Hodge, fresh off the injured list, closed out the 9th inning in the Cubs shutout victory. (Box score)

Key Moment

The three-run 2nd inning gave Chicago important breathing room after a couple of games that didn’t go well.

Why the Cubs Won

Everything went well in this one including terrific starting pitching and a ton of offense.

Stats That Matter

  • Boyd’s great season continued Wednesday with one of his best performances: 6 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 3 K, 0 BB.
  • Busch had three hits and made a couple of outstanding defensive plays at first base.
  • Happ keeps hitting homers and driving in runs.
  • Tucker reached three more times and is starting to look locked in at the plate.

Bottom Line

There is no such thing as a must-win game in June but it was reassuring to see the Cubs forcefully slam the door on a potential losing streak. Boyd has been a huge addition to the rotation and is pitching like an ace right now. If Chicago can earn the split, they will be no worse for wear against the Cardinals.
