Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (6/6/25): Tigers 3, Cubs 1 – Skubal Quiets Bats in Loss

The Cubs took on the best team in baseball when they faced off against the Tigers at Comerica Park Friday night. It was a low-scoring affair but in the end, Chicago could not break through against the defending Cy Young winner and lost the opener.

Both starting pitchers, Ben Brown and Tarik Skubal, were very sharp and neither team scored in the first four frames. Detroit took the lead on an RBI single by Gleyber Torres in the bottom of the 5th inning.

The North Siders evened things up in the top of the 6th on a pair of doubles by Matt Shaw and Kyle Tucker. The Tigers wasted no time restoring their advantage when Spencer Torkelson hit a solo home run in the bottom of the frame to make it a 2-1 game.

Jahmai Jones cracked a pinch-hit home run against Génesis Cabrera in the bottom of the 8th to increase Detroit’s margin to 3-1. Will Vest got the final four hitters to close out victory by that same score. (Box score)

Key Moment

The Cubs had runners on first and third with two outs in the 8th inning trailing 2-1 with Seiya Suzuki at the plate against the Tigers closer Vest. Suzuki hit a fly ball deep to right field that outfielder Kerry Carpenter caught up against the wall for the final out of the frame.

Why the Cubs Lost

They had a couple of chances against one of the best pitchers in baseball, but they just couldn’t break through and dropped a close one.

Stats That Matter

  • That is now two very good starts in a row for Brown: 7 IP, 2 R, 7 H, 7 K, 1 BB.
  • Tucker had a pair of nice swings against Skubal with a single in addition to his RBI double.
  • Shaw had another two-hit game.

Bottom Line

The Cubs came very close to stealing a game from one of the best in the game, and they might have done it if Suzuki’s shot in the 8th had gone one foot farther. Brown pitching like this will be a huge boost to the rotation going down the stretch.

On Deck

Game two of the series is Saturday afternoon at 12:10pm CT. Jameson Taillon is on the mound against Keider Montero in a game airing on MLB Network and Marquee, with a radio feed on 670 The Score.
