Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (6/1/25): Cubs 7, Reds 3 – Busch Powers Cubs to W
The Cubs and the Reds met in the deciding game of their series at a wind-swept Wrigley Field Sunday afternoon. The North Siders jumped in front early and never looked back, taking the win and the series comfortably.
Chicago had a big inning against starter Nick Martinez in the bottom of the 3rd, beginning with an RBI single by Pete Crow-Armstrong. Dansby Swanson doubled him home and then Michael Busch cracked a two-run homer to right field to put the home team ahead 4-0.
Jameson Taillon did an excellent job against Cincinnati’s lineup, keeping them scoreless through five frames. PCA singled and stole second before coming home on a Busch base hit to give the Cubs a 5-0 lead in the 5th.
Taillon made his only mistake in the top of the 6th when Elly De La Cruz whacked a massive two-run homer down the right field line to cut the deficit to 5-2. The Cubs got those back in the 7th when a couple of errors loaded the bases for Nico Hoerner. He knocked in a pair with a single to bring the score to 7-2.
Cincinnati grabbed a run in the 9th inning but Chicago easily sealed the 7-3 victory. (Box score)
Key Moment
Busch’s home run doubled the lead to give the Cubs a lot of cushion with conditions that were not conducive to offense.
Why the Cubs Won
Another quality starting pitching effort and plenty of offensive production led to victory.
Stats That Matter
- Taillon has been very good lately: 6.1 IP, 2 R, 3 H, 2 K, 1 BB.
- Busch got on base four times Sunday with walks in addition to his hits.
- PCA had three hits as well and always makes things happen.
- Kyle Tucker had to come out of the game early after jamming his right ring finger on a stolen base attempt.
Bottom Line
The North Siders won every series they played in this stretch of games against losing teams. They now have a very valuable cushion in the standings as they head back out on a potentially difficult road trip. I’m not sure anyone expected Chicago to be 15 games above .500 at this point of the season, but they keep playing well no matter who they face.
On Deck
The Cubs have Monday off before beginning a series in Washington Tuesday at 5:45pm CT. Cade Horton gets the start against old friend Trevor Williams in a game available on Marquee with radio coverage on 670 The Score.
