Daniel Palencia Settling into Closer Role
Ryan Pressly lost his job as the Cubs’ closer in early May, with Porter Hodge taking over at the end of games for Craig Counsell. Hodge fell victim to an oblique injury, something that is becoming way too common for the Cubs.
With Hodge down, Counsell turned to Daniel Palencia when a save opportunity arose in Miami. Palencia got two outs to begin the frame, then proceeded to blow the game by allowing three straight Marlins batters to reach. After his rough closing debut, Palencia has worked three scoreless outings, collecting the save in each of them.
Palencia’s best weapon is his fastball, with an average velocity of 99.2 miles per hour. He’s been able to mix the heater with a strong slider, making opponents look foolish on a regular basis. His command has been an issue in past seasons, but that hasn’t been the case this year as his walk rate is down to a career-low 9.7% through Monday.

Hodge’s injury wasn’t believed to be severe, but recent reports indicate he hasn’t been progressing as the team had hoped. That means Palencia will continue pitching in the 9th inning for at least a little while longer. While he may be moved out of the closer role once Hodge returns, having that velocity and control at the back end of the bullpen will be extremely valuable for the Cubs as they enter the summer.
