Cubs Signing Lefty Reliever Génesis Cabrera
Mike Rodriguez reported on Tuesday evening that the Cubs are signing left-handed reliever Génesis Cabrera. Jon Heyman quickly confirmed that report.
According to my sources, relief pitcher Génesis Cabrera is close to reaching an agreement with the Chicago Cubs #Cubs. The left-handed pitcher did not accept going to AAA with the Mets, so he was released. #GenesisCabrera pic.twitter.com/tyLzjoWZ2w

Cabrera signed with the Mets this offseason and appeared in six games, posting a 3.52 ERA. After being designated for assignment on Saturday, he elected free agency on Tuesday. The nature of the new deal has yet to be announced, but a major league contract seems most likely. Since Cabrera declined the assignment to Triple-A with the Mets, the Cubs likely offered him a deal that includes a spot on their 26-man roster.
His numbers aren’t amazing, but Jed Hoyer has earned our trust when it comes to under-the-radar signings. Cabrera features a sinker and a curveball, each of which he throws about 30% of the time. In addition, he mixes in a four-seam fastball, cutter, and splitter.
