Brad Keller to Open for Cade Horton’s Debut
Cade Horton has been called up and is set to make his MLB debut Saturday in New York, but it won’t be a conventional start for the right-hander. Craig Counsell announced on Friday that the Cubs would have Brad Keller start the game as the opener, and that Horton would be available out of the bullpen

It’s a risky move, and one that has caused conflict among fans. Some want Horton to have a standard start, but that would require beginning his major league career against three of the best hitters in baseball. The Mets’ lineup begins with Francisco Lindor, Juan Soto, and Pete Alonso, who have combined to earn 5.2 fWAR just six weeks into the season.
If all goes well, Keller can work the 1st inning and clear the path for Horton to have a softer landing spot that will get even softer in subsequent games. The Mets are the last stop in what has been a grueling schedule to open the year for the Cubs, but Horton would be in line to face the White Sox and Marlins if the Cubs maintain a regular rotation. He’d get the Rockies if he remains up that long.
Starting off your career against one of the best teams in baseball might not be ideal, but Horton has dominated in big moments before. Nonetheless, Counsell is hoping to give his rookie an advantage by having to face the top of Carlos Mendoza‘s lineup one less time.
While using an opener has become more common in the last few years, it’s by no means a regular occurrence. The Brewers tried using an opener last weekend, but allowed nine runs in the first two innings. Counsell and the Cubs are hoping things go more smoothly tonight in Queens.
Ed. note: I’ll have more thoughts on Horton’s usage in the lineup post for tonight’s game.
