Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (3/28/25): Diamondbacks 8, Cubs 1 – Suárez, Snakes Slam Cubs

The Cubs were hoping for another win after taking home the first game of their series against the Diamondbacks on Thursday night. Unfortunately, Jameson Taillon struggled, and Chicago nemesis Eugenio Suárez blasted a pair of home runs to lead Arizona to a comfortable victory Friday.

The North Siders struck first in the top of the 2nd inning when Pete Crow-Armstrong hit an RBI double. They stranded two runners on second and third, leading 1-0 after the frame. In the bottom half of the inning, Suárez punished a Taillon cutter that hung in the middle of the zone, launching a two-run home run that put the D-Backs ahead 2-1.

The Snakes’ third baseman got another pitch in the heart of the plate in the 4th and cracked a second two-run shot to increase the home team’s advantage to 4-1. Geraldo Perdomo had an RBI single later in the inning, and Pavin Smith doubled home another in the 5th making it 6-1.

Arizona starter Merrill Kelly and the rest of the bullpen kept the Cubs quiet. The Diamondbacks would score a couple more runs late and win by a score of 8-1. (Box score)

Key Moment

The Cubs had runners on second and third with nobody out after Crow-Armstrong’s RBI double in the 2nd inning. Matt Shaw grounded out weakly, Carson Kelly grounded to third, and a throw home got Nico Hoerner at the plate, then Ian Happ popped up to end the threat. Chicago never seriously threatened to score the rest of the night.

Why the Cubs Lost

Cubs’ pitching gave up a ton of hard contact, and the offense couldn’t do anything after the early innings.

Stats That Matter

  • Taillon did not have it on Friday and got hit hard: 4.1 IP, 6 R, 9 H, 2 K, and 0 BB.
  • PCA walked in addition to his double and made a rare base-running mistake, getting picked off first base.
  • Dansby Swanson got on base twice with a single and a walk.

Bottom Line

Suárez now has 34 career home runs against the Cubs, and honestly, it feels like much more than that. Jameson Taillon was a big part of the rotation in 2024 and pitched well down the stretch. Friday’s effort was more like his difficult 2023 season, which is not something that Chicago wants to see in 2025.

On Deck

Game three of the series starts at 7:10pm CT on Saturday. Shöta Imanaga is on the hill against Brandon Pfaadt in a contest available on Marquee with radio coverage on 670 The Score.
