Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (2/28/25): Cubs 8, Rangers 8 – No Low T as Cubs Earn Third Consecutive Draw

The Cubs went on the road to Surprise and played the Rangers Friday afternoon. Remarkably, Chicago stormed back from a big early deficit to even the game and finish in a tie for the third consecutive game.

Justin Steele got the start and was mostly good but did allow a two-run homer to catcher Kyle Higashioka in the bottom of the 2nd to give Texas a 2-0 lead. The Cubs answered back when Gage Workman hit his own two-run shot in the 4th to tie the score.

The Rangers then exploded for six unanswered runs, including Higashioka’s second home run of the game, to build an 8-2 advantage in the 6th. The North Siders showed some fight in the top of the 7th with a three-run dinger by Haydn McGeary that cut the deficit to 8-6.

The Cubs finished their comeback with two more in the top of the 9th to even the score, but they weren’t able to push another across to break their streak of draws. Texas went quietly in the bottom of the frame and it was another spring training tie. (Box score)

Key Moment

Jordan Nwogu hit an RBI single in the top of the 9th to even the score and avoid the Cubs’ first loss of the spring.

Why the Cubs Tied

The young players battled back hard in the final innings to get back into the game.

Stats That Matter

  • Steele did a good job in this appearance other than the home run: 3 IP, 2 R, 2 H, 2 K, and 0 BB.
  • Miguel Amaya doubled Friday as his excellent spring continues.

Bottom Line

It appears as though the Cubs are never going to lose again, but now it’s getting reasonable to wonder whether they’ll win again, either. This is the weirdest stretch of baseball I can remember in any spring training. None of it matters, of course, and everyone on the roster is getting their necessary work in to be ready for Opening Day, so it’s just interesting to watch this unusual situation play out.

On Deck

The Cubs split squads on Saturday, taking on Cleveland at Sloan Park starting at 2:05pm CT and then heading right back to Surprise to play Kansas City at 7:05pm CT. The afternoon game is available on Marquee and the nightcap is not televised.
