Cubs Sign Brad Keller, Old Friend Brandon Hughes to Minor League Deals

The Cubs may not be making major league moves despite all kinds of reports about their activity, but they remain aggressive in the depth department. Sources informed CI on Wednesday that they were nearing a deal with Brad Keller, and that the pact was officially announced late Friday morning. But that’s not all. Patrick Mooney of the Athletic reported that the Cubs have also signed lefty Brandon Hughes, a left-handed reliever who debuted with Chicago in 2022 after converting from the outfield.

Keller has logged over 700 innings in the major leagues, most recently appearing with the Red Sox. He spent most of his 2024 season in the minor leagues, posting a 3.28 ERA with an 8.1% walk rate. He receives an invite to spring training and will be an excellent depth piece. Hughes saw action in 15 games during the 2024 season with the Diamondbacks, boasting an impressive 10.70 K/9 with a not-so-impressive 8.15 ERA. Barring injury, Hughes will start the year in the minors as a depth piece for use throughout the season.
