Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (9/19/22): Marlins 10, Cubs 3 – Marlins Mash Cubs in Miami
The Cubs made their first trip to Miami in three years to take on the Marlins Monday night. Chicago actually went ahead early before being absolutely clobbered by the home team.
The Cubs took the lead against Edward Cabrera in the top of the 3rd inning with a majestic solo home run off the bat of Christopher Morel. Ian Happ added an RBI double and the road team had a 2-0 edge but the wheels would fall off in the bottom of the frame.
Jon Berti hit a solo shot off of Wade Miley to cut the lead in half. Then an error, a hit by pitch, and a single loaded the bases for Bryan De La Cruz. The Marlins outfielder pounded a Miley pitch over the right-center field wall for a grand slam and it was suddenly a 5-2 game.
Chicago’s starter gave up two more runs in the 4th inning before his night came to an end. Zach McKinstry doubled home a run in the 5th but David Ross‘s team was never really close to getting back in the game.
Miami tacked on a few more runs and took home a 10-3 victory. (Box score)
Why the Cubs Lost
The big 3rd inning doomed the Cubs on Monday, creating far too big a hole for their offense to dig out of.
Eye on the Future
- It was nice to see Morel drive the ball for a homer after his recent struggles.
- Jeremiah Estrada pitched very well in two innings of work striking out four batters.
Taking Note
- You know Miley is off when he gives up two dingers: 7 IP, 7 R, 3 ER, 7 H, 2 K, and 2 BB.
Bottom Line
Well this is just one of those late season games you just throw away in a losing season. Hopefully, the Cubs offer a more entertaining game in Miami on Tuesday.
On Deck
Speaking of Tuesday’s game, it is at 6:40pm CT. Adrian Sampson faces off against Pablo López in a game broadcast on Marquee Sports Network and 670 The Score.
