Cubs Release Greg Deichmann as Alexander Canario Promotion Crowds AAA Roster

Slugging outfielder Alexander Canario was promoted to Triple-A Iowa on Monday and Brennen Davis is returning to affiliated action Tuesday with South Bend as he continues his rehab. Davis will likely be in Des Moines by the end of the month, giving the I-Cubs two more outfielders and creating a roster jam. That lack of room forced the organization to release Greg Deichmann, who was acquired from the A’s last year in the Andrew Chafin deal.

Deichmann made his MLB debut on August 6, 2021 and batted .133 with a .294 OPS over just 31 plate appearances with the Cubs. Despite some hot stretches this season, hit bat never came around and he ended up hitting .214 with a .606 OPS in 282 PAs for Iowa. The biggest issue was that Deichmann wasn’t able to translate his 70-grade raw power into game power, as he had only seven homers this year.

Though 27 is a little old for a prospect, we’ve seen how Patrick Wisdom finally broke through after extended time in the minors. There could yet be a path for Deichmann if he’s able to find a way to unlock that pop.
