Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (7/14/22): Mets 8, Cubs 0 – Lifeless Cubs Blanked by Mets

The Cubs’ losing streak continued on Thursday as they lost their seventh consecutive game to the Mets. Keegan Thompson was uncharacteristically wild and Chicago did almost nothing on offense, so the game was effectively over almost as soon as it got started.

Francisco Lindor gave New York the lead in the top of the 1st with a double to center. They really hit Thompson hard in the 2nd with three consecutive loud hits to put three runs on the board and create what felt like an insurmountable lead.

Brandon Nimmo and Pete Alonso would add home runs later in the game in what quickly became a blowout. Mark Leiter Jr.and Daniel Norris were the mop-up men the rest of the game after Thompson came out. (Box score)

Why the Cubs Lost

A bad start by Thompson put them behind and yet again the hitting did nothing with the few chances they had.

Eye on the Future

• Nico Hoerner remains one of the bright spots with two more hits on Thursday night.
• Thompson just was not nearly as sharp as he has been in recent starts: 4.1 IP, 5 R, 8 H, 5 K, and 4 BB.

Stats That Matter

• David Ross clearly didn’t want to watch the rest of the game and was ejected for arguing for a balk in the 4th inning.

Bottom Line

This was another lifeless effort from the Cubs and with not much to play for other than future employment, there is a danger of things really going downhill from here. Motivation will be a big issue the rest of the season.
