Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (6/11/22): Yankees 8, Cubs 0 – Cubs Bombed in Bronx
After a marathon 13-inning loss Friday night, the Cubs were hoping for a different outcome in the Bronx Saturday. Instead, rookie pitcher Matt Swarmer was buried under a pile of home runs in a Yankees rout.
Aaron Judge crushed a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the 1st for New York, but Swarmer actually gave up only that one run through three frames before the wheels came off in the 4th. In that inning, Giancarlo Stanton and Gleyber Torres hit back-to-back jacks to increase the lead to three. Stanton’s 119.8 mph smash was the hardest-hit ball in baseball in 2022 according to Statcast.
Three more Yankee dingers put the game on ice in the bottom of the 5th. Judge added another and, most importantly for Cubs fans, Anthony Rizzo got one just over the right field wall. Swarmer set a dubious franchise record with six homers allowed in a single start.
The Cubs did nothing against Yankee starter Jordan Montgomery and were shut out on five hits. New York would add a couple more runs off of Michael Rucker to take home a 8-0 win. (Box score)
Why the Cubs Lost
They say if you only allow solo home runs you still have a chance to win. Well, that rule doesn’t really hold up when you give up six of them.
Key Moment
The Yankees blew the game open in the 4th and 5th inning with their power barrage.
Stats That Matter
- Swarmer paid big time for every mistake he made: 5 IP, 6 R, 7 H, 4 K, and 0 BB.
- Christopher Morel finally had his streak of reaching base snapped at 22 games, but it was a heck of a ride.
- Rucker gave the Cubs three valuable innings to save the rest of the bullpen.
- Yan Gomes returned to the lineup and singled twice.
Bottom Line
The Cubs have now lost six consecutive games and the bottom seems close to falling out. If there was ever any inkling to keep playing veterans over players that have potential for the future it should be abandoned now.
On Deck
Chicago looks to avoid the sweep Sunday at 12:35pm CT. Keegan Thompson (6-1, 3.17 ERA) takes on Jameson Taillon (6-1, 2.73 ERA) in a game airing on MLB Network (out of market only) and Marquee Sports Network.
