Second Round Pick James Triantos Raking in AZ Complex League
Some were skeptical when the Cubs selected James Triantos out of James Madison High School (Vienna, VA) with their second pick this summer, largely because his .712 batting average seemed too good to be true. He also had 11 home runs, 27 RBI, and 23 stolen bases while also going 9-0 with a 1.18 ERA and 62 strikeouts this season to lead the Warhawks to a Class 6 Virginia State Championship.
Surely the 18-year-old would meet his match upon facing professionals.
Well, he did go hitless in his first two games as part of the Cubs’ Arizona Complex League squad. Since then, however, he’s had multiple hits in nine of 22 games. That includes Friday, when he went 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles and also walked twice. He followed that up by going 3-for-4 with two homers and a double Saturday.

Triantos is now batting .327 with a .970 OPS that includes six homers while facing pitchers that are typically 2-4 years older. That’ll play.
