Cubs to Face Reds in Next Year’s Field of Dreams Game
The Cubs have been living a nightmare for the last two months, but they’ll be featured in next year’s Field of Dreams Game in Dyersville, Iowa. David Ross had already let that cat out of the bag, but Gordon Wittenmyer confirmed Monday that their opponent will be the Reds. That’s a fitting matchup because Cincinnati faced the White Sox in the scandalous 1919 World Series and having those two teams in it this year would have been a bit too contrived.
The game will reportedly be played on Thursday, August 11, after which the teams will take Friday off and finish the three-game series over the weekend in Cincinnati. As things currently sit with the 2022 schedules, both the Cubs and Reds are set to be off for the proposed date and could easily shift things by a day.
That still seems a little odd in terms of travel, what with the teams heading west only to go back to Cincy, but a special game like this makes the change worthwhile. The good news for the Cubs is that Dyersville being about halfway between Des Moines and Chicago means most of their roster can easily make the trip after being called up from Triple-A.
And who knows, maybe being featured in such a cool event will get the Cubs to hit fast-forward on the rebuild. Because if they’re still playing anything like they are now, MLB would be better off just replaying the Sox-Yankees game that was one of the best, most fun contests anyone has seen in a hot minute.
Ease our pain, Cubs.
