Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (3/7/21): D-Backs 5, Cubs 4 – Jake Day Is Back
Jake Arrieta made his first appearance in a Cubs uniform since 2017 on Sunday in Scottsdale. Arrieta kept the Diamondbacks off the board early. Home runs from Anthony Rizzo and Willson Contreras gave Chicago a 3-0 lead.
Adbert Alzolay, competing for a rotation spot, did not have his best stuff on Sunday. The young righty allowed five runs to the D-Backs, who never looked back en route to the win. (Box score)
Why the Cubs Lost
The offense shut down after the early home runs preventing any comeback.
Key Moment
Stephen Vogt hit a two-run home run off Alzolay in the 4th inning to give Arizona a 5-3 lead.
Stats That Matter
- Arrieta had some command issues but avoided damage: 2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 K, and 1 BB.
- Alzolay did not avoid damage: 1.1 IP, 5 R, 4 H, 0 K, and 2 BB.
- Contreras walked twice in addition to his opposite-field homer.
Bottom Line
It was nice to have a Jake day back in our lives. I’m also hoping that Sunday was just a blip for Alzolay.
On Deck
