Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (3/10/20): Cubs 16, Giants 3 – Cubs Hit Johnny C. Good
Monday’s day off seemed to do the Cubs a world of good as they came out of the gates steaming against the Giants in Scottsdale on Tuesday. Chicago jumped all over Johnny Cueto, scoring eight runs in the first three innings mostly on singles.
Tyler Chatwood had no such issues, throwing 3.2 scoreless frames in his start. Willson Contreras hit a solo homer in the 4th and Javy Báez followed suit in the 6th as the Cubs coasted to the victory. (Box score)
Why the Cubs Won
The offense kept the line moving in the early innings against Cueto as the Cubs had five consecutive singles in the 2nd inning. That kind of hitting with runners in scoring position is definitely something you want to see carry over to the regular season.
Key Moment
Báez lined a double into the left field gap in the 2nd, the only extra base hit of the inning, scoring two runs to give his team a 5-0 lead.
Stats That Matter
- Chatwood keeps making an excellent case to be in the rotation: 3.2 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 3 K, and 0 BB. He also was touching 97 on the radar gun, if that’s something you might be interested in.
- Contreras and Báez were each a triple shy of the cycle Tuesday.
- Nico Hoerner had two hits, a walk, and also stole a base in a perfect day at he plate.
- Rowan Wick had his first scoreless inning of the spring.
Bottom Line
A game like this demonstrates just how scary the Cubs offense can be if it’s on, and Kris Bryant, maybe the best hitter on the team, had the day off.
On Deck
The Cubs welcome the Padres to Sloan Park for a Wednesday night game at 8:05pm CT. Yu Darvish gets the start in a game that will be broadcast on Marquee Sports Network.
