Tyler Chatwood Named Thursday Starter, Adbert Alzolay in Holding Pattern

Well, I guess I can cancel the order on that customized Adbert Alzolay jersey. Despite openly talking about giving their top pitching prospect a shot in place of Kyle Hendricks this Thursday, the Cubs have opted to take the safer route by giving the start to Tyler Chatwood.

This was probably going to be the call the whole time, since Chatwood has earned it with his solid effort out of the ‘pen and a stellar spot-start for Jon Lester earlier this season. Even so, there’s a different feel when a player is making his debut and the Mets would have offered a softer landing than most other teams. That said, it’s still possible that Alzolay could get the call when Hendricks’ spot comes up again next Tuesday.

The Cubs could also opt for a sixth starter as the first half comes to a close, in which case Alzolay would be a no-brainer. The righty has been nails for Triple-A Iowa since a rough couple starts when he first came back from injury and the Cubs could use a flamethrower with swing-and-miss stuff, whether in the rotation or the bullpen.

One way or the other, Alzolay will be in Chicago this season. I just hope it’s soon.
