Cubs Add Mike Freeman to Roster for Additional Infield Depth
The Cubs have selected the contract of infielder Mike Freeman from Triple-A and the journeyman infielder will be available today as they take on the White Sox. Freeman fills the spot on the 40-man roster vacated when Addison Russell was placed on administrative leave.
Fans may remember Freeman as a frequent presence late last season, when he appeared in 15 games as a September call-up. Or maybe you’ve forgotten all about the man who slashed .160/.222/.240 with with a wRC+ of 21. He did hit a respectable .274/.330/.396 with six homers for Iowa this season, so there’s that.
This move isn’t an exciting one by any stretch — unless you’re Cubs Insider’s Brendan Miller, who is incredibly bullish on Freeman’s skillset — but it does give the Cubs some additional depth.
Though Freeman will certainly only be with the Cubs until the conclusion of the regular season, there’s a chance his time could be even more abbreviated. As Ken Rosenthal was first to report, Russell is considering an emergency appeal of MLB’s decision to place him on leave.
MLB’s domestic-violence policy allows #Cubs’ Russell to request emergency hearing that must take place within 24 hours of him asking to be removed from administrative leave. Sources say Russell, his agent Scott Boras and the players’ union are strongly considering that option.
