Cubs Claim Jacob Hannemann Off Waivers, DFA Mike Freeman
There isn’t much to tell you about this roster move that the headline doesn’t already make clear, other than it’s pretty cool that Jacob Hannemann is back in the organization. A third round draft pick by the Cubs in 2013, Hannemann worked his way up to AAA Iowa before he was claimed off waivers by the Mariners on September 4 of this past season.
The left-handed outfielder was actually called up by Seattle shortly thereafter, going 3-for-20 with one home run and one RBI in 11 games. So it was kind of like baseball’s version of Rumspringa.
In order to make room on the 40-man roster, the Cubs designated Mike Freeman for assignment. It’s hard to make any greater implications from this move, but my mind goes to the idea of outfield depth and the Cubs needing more of it as they face the possibility of trading some guys away.
Or it’s just that Hannemann is more of an asset than Freeman.
