Happy pitchers and catchers report day, er, week. Anyway, pitchers and catchers have reported to Spring Training and full-squad workouts have begun. For the first time, the Cubs did so as World Series Champions. As the title defense begins in earnest, let’s take a look at what the teams in the Central have done this offseason.
Chicago Cubs
- Signed Brian Duensing to a 1yr/$2M deal
- Signed Koji Uehara to a 1yr/$6M deal
- Signed Jon Jay to a 1yr/$8M deal
- Signed Brett Anderson to a 1yr/$3.5M deal
- Acquired pitching prospect Alec Mills in a trade with the Royals, in exchange for outfielder Donnie Dewees
- Acquired Eddie Butler in a trade with the Colorado Rockies in exchange for James Farris
- Acquired Wade Davis in a trade from the Kansas City Royals in exchange for Jorge Soler
- Avoided arbitration with Pedro Strop, Jake Arrieta, Justin Grimm, and Hector Rondon
St. Louis Cardinals
- Signed Dexter Fowler to a 5yr/$82M deal
- Signed Carlos Martinez to a 5yr/$51M contract extension
- Avoided arbitration with Matt Adams, Trevor Rosenthal, and Kevin Siegrist
- Shifted Matt Carpenter to first base
Pittsburgh Pirates
- Bolstered bullpen by signing Daniel Hudson to a 2yr/$11M deal
- Avoided arbitration with Jordy Mercer, Drew Hutchison, Jared Hughes, Juan Nicasio, and Gerrit Cole
- Shifted Starling Marte to center and Gregory Polanco to left, while Andrew McCutchen is shifting to right
Milwaukee Brewers:
- Signed Eric Thames to a 3yr/$16M deal, with a club option for a 4th year
- Signed Neftali Feliz to a 1yr/$3.5 deal
- Signed Craig Counsell to a three year contract extension
- Acquired Travis Shaw from the Red Sox in exchange for Tyler Thornburg
- Signed Tommy Milone to a 1yr/$1.25M deal
- Avoided arbitration with Wily Peralta, Scooter Gennett, and Kirk Nieuwenhuis
Cincinnati Reds
- Signed Scott Feldman to a 1yr/$2.3M deal
- Signed Drew Storen to a 1yr/$3M deal
- Avoided arbitration with Billy Hamilton, Blake Wood, Tony Cingrani, and Zack Cozart
- Signed Louis Coleman and Desmond Jennings to minor league contracts
