Cubs Roll, Win Behind Strong Arrieta Outing (Video)

It’s like that old song that you just can’t get enough of – Jake did it yet again. He threw 92 total pitches through five innings and gave up one run on three hits and four walks while striking out six batters. He was pulled for a pinch hitter, Jorge Soler, who ended up walking to load the bases which eventually led to a run scoring after Fowler hit into a fielder’s choice.

Cubs win by the final score of 7-2 (Box Score).

Great at-bats

The Cubs managed to get every starting position player on base today. They finished the day with more walks (eleven) then hits (eight). Every batter contributed and did so with high quality at-bats. Kris Bryant, who left the game early due to rolling his right ankle running the bases, was the only Cub to score more than one run, he scored two.

Ben Zobrist was the only batter with more than one hit. He finished today with two hits and two RBIs.

David Ross hit the game-winning home run in the bottom of the second inning. Grandpa Rossy now has two home runs on the year. He was in today filling in for Miguel Montero who was placed on the 15-day DL earlier in the day with a sore back.

Here’s video of Ross’ home run:

Bryant injury

As we reported earlier, Kris Bryant rolled his ankle in the third inning and was eventually removed from the game in the top of the fifth inning. It’s being reported that he has a mild sprained ankle and will undergo an MRI for precautionary purposes.

Bullpen holds

The bullpen got the job done today and had a sufficient lead that allowed them to cruise to the end. Grimm, Cahill, Strop and Ramirez combined to pitch the final four innings giving up one run on three hits, three walks and seven combined strikeouts.
